The Zombies Celebrate Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction on 50th Anniversary of No. 1 Hit

The Zombies were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Friday, but that wasn’t the only milestone the band celebrated.

The rockers’ long-awaited induction into the Hall of Fame fell on the 50th anniversary of their classic hit “Time of the Season” reaching No. 1 on the US Cash Box Top 100.

“It’s actually 50 years ago to this very day, the 29th of March, 1969 that ‘Time of the Season’ reached the No. 1 position in America,” keyboardist Rod Argent, 73, told the crowd during the band’s acceptance speech at New York City’s Barclays Center.

Another coincidence for the rockers – who cemented their legacy with a string of psychedelic-inspired pop hits in the ‘60s – was the fact that the ceremony took place in Brooklyn, the city where they played their first show in the United States, on Murray the K’s Christmas special in 1964.

“On behalf of all the guys in the band, I can say that we’re absolutely thrilled and delighted to have been elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” Argent said. “To be honest, it’s honor enough to have been nominated four times in the last five years. But to finally pass the winning post this time – fantastic.”

The group then performed a selection of hits, including “Time of the Season,” “This Will Be Our Year,” “Tell Her No,” and “She’s Not There.”

Argent was inducted along with fellow bandmates Colin Blunstone, 73, Hugh Grundy, 74, Chris White, 76, and the late Paul Atkinson, who died in 2004.

The group joined an impressive lineup of fellow inductees at the 34th annual ceremony, including Stevie Nicks, Janet Jackson, Radiohead, Def Leppard, the Cure and Roxy Music.

The 34th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will air April 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, HBO Go, HBO Now, and On Demand.
