Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Hire Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Advisor to Head Communications Team

Hillary Clinton‘s former campaign advisor is trading politics for the palace.

Amid the creation of a new office for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry – a break from their previous joint “court” at Kensington Palace with Kate Middleton and Prince William – the royal parents-to-be have appointed Sara Latham as the head of their communications team, the palace announced Thursday.

Latham acted as a senior advisor for Clinton’s 2016 campaign from August 2015 until the November 2016 election, according to her LinkedIn profile. She joins Meghan and Harry’s team from public relations company Freuds, “where she oversaw global corporate accounts with a particular emphasis on executive thought leadership and purpose-led campaigns,” according to the palace. She also was the founder and principal of the Latham Group from 2006 until 2018.

Latham, who holds dual citizenship in the U.K. and U.S., also has experience in the U.K. government, serving as Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, Sport and Olympics – at the time when it was announced London would host the 2012 Olympics.

Meghan voiced support for Clinton in the presidential election, even posting on Instagram in favor of the Democratic candidate. The former actress also called Donald Trump “misogynistic” and “divisive” during an appearance on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore in the run-up to the 2016 election.

And the Duchess of Sussex’s admiration for Clinton goes back even further – to when she was just 11 years old and wrote to the politician to ask for help when she found a TV advertisement to be sexist.

“Growing up, I had a poster in my room of Rosie flexing her biceps,” she wrote in Glamour. “When I was in grade school, I saw this sexist commercial for dish soap. With Rosie’s ‘We can do it!’ mantra in mind, I wrote a letter to Procter & Gamble, Hillary Clinton and Nick News anchor Linda Ellerbee, who sent a camera crew to meet me. Guess what? They changed the commercial.”

It was announced Thursday that Queen Elizabeth has agreed to the creation of a new household for Meghan and Harry. Prince Charles is also in support of the decision, which will be established in the spring.

“This long-planned move will ensure that permanent support arrangements for The Duke and Duchess’s work are in place as they start their family and move to their official residence at Frogmore Cottage,” a statement from the palace reads.

Meghan and Harry’s office will also be moving out of Kensington Palace and into Buckingham Palace, where the Queen resides. However, Meghan and Harry will be living at their new cottage home in Windsor later this spring.

William and Kate’s office will remain in Kensington Palace, where they live with their three children.

With William one day set to be the Prince of Wales – and all that entails as heir to his father Prince Charles – Harry and Meghan will want to forge their own path, so it’s a natural time to split up, insiders believe.

“The arrival of Meghan has changed the dynamic of the relationship in a fairly significant way,” royals author Sally Bedell Smith previously told PEOPLE. “It is inevitable and practical because it gives Harry and Meghan some freedom to build up their own collection of interests and charities.”
